Local nail salon organizes a pampering day for at risk youth

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Melissa Stephens, owner of Berry Hill-based Melissa Stephens Nail Artistry, partnered with Youth Villages on Tuesday to bring a day of indulgence to a few special girls.

Stephens enlisted the talents of hairstylists, make-up artists and photographers, along with donated clothing from a boutique, to transform Youth Village’s south side office into a full-service salon.

“I grew up watching ‘Clueless’ and always envied Cher and Dionne’s ability to get makeovers whenever they wanted,” Stephens wryly recalls. “I figured that if it couldn’t happen for me, I could make it happen for someone else! Why not for these girls who have gone through so much?”

Youth Villages is a private organization that works in many ways to integrate emotionally and behaviorally troubled teens back into society, including establishing a group home for children waiting for foster-care placement. While Youth Villages has several Nashville area group homes for boys, only one exists for girls. After hearing a close friend talk about her involvement in the organization, Stephens decided to create a special experience for them.

The unique experience was not wasted on Youth Villages resident Ella Birch. “This was the first time I’ve had my nails done,” the 12-year old exclaimed. “My friends will be so jealous. I can’t wait to show them!”

Melissa Stephens Nail Artistry is dedicated to bringing a fun and fabulous nail salon experience to today’s independent working woman. She knows that nail art is an extension of self-expression and believes that every woman should be free to experiment and discover how to best express herself.
